It’s decidedly chilly out in the corridor as I click answer on my phone.

“Jake!”

“Abi! How’s the enforced holiday going?”

“It might actually be fun,” I admit.

He laughs. “That means you’re up to something you shouldn’t be. What have you stumbled across? Some ancient murder mystery case in the wilds of Cumbria?”

“Nothing that serious,” I reply. “There is a bit of a potential mystery to solve though.”

“Good. That will keep you occupied, which means you’re less likely to go crazy being kept away from your work.”

“Speaking of work, what are you up to?” I ask cheekily.

“You know I’m not allowed to discuss an active case,” he replies in a mock serious tone.

“You’re such a spoilsport,” I bat back.

“Well, if you need any digging doing, strictly off the record of course, for your vacation sleuthing, then give me a ring and I’ll see what I can do. What’s it about anyway?”

“A local hotel might be the target of some sabotage tactics. There are a couple of potential suspects. I don’t suppose you could pull some strings and get a background check on a guy called Dave Findlay?” I venture.

“Who is he?”

“He was the chef at the hotel that’s having the problems but they had to fire him after he lost his temper and yelled at a customer in the restaurant.”

“Why are chefs always so volatile?” Jake muses. “It’s like they train them that way at catering college or something.”

“I have no idea, but if you are able to find out anything about this particular volatile chef it would be a huge help.”

“Consider it done. I’ll let you know what comes back about him.”

“Thanks, Jake. I appreciate your help.”

“No problem.” There’s a pause before he adds, “I know I’m wasting my time even saying this but be careful Abi, won’t you? If you discover there’s more to this than meets the eye then let the local police handle it, OK? I know you’re great at your job and perfectly capable of solving an investigation but that’s when you have the resources and back-up of the Celebrity Crimes Investigation Agency. It’s a whole different ball game going it alone when you’re sleuthing.”

I sigh. “You sound like my aunt. She warned me off getting involved earlier.”

“And, knowing you, you’re not going to listen to either of us,” Jake says, sounding a tad irritated.

“I’ll be in touch,” is my non-committal reply. “What time zone are you working in so I don’t accidentally call you in the middle of the night where you are.”

He laughs. “Nice try, Anderson. I’m not even going to give you a time zone otherwise you’ll be busy figuring out where I am. I’ve got to go. Be careful.”

The line goes dead. I take a moment, mulling over his caution to be careful. I want to help Ed and his family save their hotel and get to the bottom of what’s going on with this suspected sabotage but what if this is far more serious than I’m thinking. I’ve never run an investigation on
